A recent conversation between Jean Vilanor Dorcin from Voile FM radio and Jean Matulnes Lamy, a founding member of VKI radio—revered as the Voice of the Ilavach Community (Radyo Vwa Kominotè Ilavach)—highlighted the urgent need to prioritize VKI radio for the long-term viability of community broadcasting. The local leaders expressed their concerns about the precarious status of Voile FM, which the Ministry of Tourism manages. This connection poses a threat, as the Haitian Government might halt its operations at any time due to bureaucratic changes or waning state interest.

On the other hand, VKI radio thrives as a collective initiative that focuses on the expression and heritage of the Ilavach people. Its governance model empowers community members with administrative rights and shared responsibilities, fostering a sense of ownership essential for maintaining a resilient media outlet. This sharply contrasts with Voile FM, which is vulnerable to government policies that could jeopardize its operation, especially if the state decides to reclaim its vital broadcasting transmitter.

Voile FM is grappling with significant operational hurdles, particularly an unreliable electricity supply. While there are potential fixes for the transmitter issues, the ongoing electricity challenges pose a significant barrier to delivering consistent service, increasing the risks tied to continued investment in Voile FM.

Local leaders have proposed a collaborative strategy to tackle these issues and ensure the community's voice remains strong. They suggest pooling the resources of both radio stations to boost their capabilities and better serve the broadcasting needs of the Ilavach Island community. By reallocating funds initially set aside for revitalizing Voile FM, they aim to strengthen VKI radio, empowering Ilavach Island to pursue greater autonomy and advancement in educational initiatives. This strategic shift protects diaspora donations, reinforces community ties, and amplifies the voices of the Ilavach people.
